We successfully advised on drafting the law to implement a deposit system in Latvia
On October 24, 2019, the Parliament of Latvia (Saeima) adopted the long-awaited amendments to the Packaging Act that would enable introduction of a deposit-return system (DRS) for packaging of beverages in Latvia as of February 1, 2022.

These amendments to the law provide for introduction of a legal framework governing operation of the deposit-return system for beverage packaging.

These amendments have been discussed since 2001; however, whereas the Packaging Act was first adopted in 2002. The legislative bill of the deposit-return system was one of the most urgent topics for discussion in recent years.

In this case experts of Ellex Klavins successfully advised representatives of the beverage production industry on the implementation of a deposit-return system for packaging and assisted in the process of drafting the legislative bill governing the deposit-return system in Latvia.

Liga Mervin, Managing Partner of Ellex Klavins, and Pauls Ancs, Associate, provided legal advice to the client and participated in drafting the bill.
Ellex advised Consolis Group on the acquisition of TMB Group's Latvian and Finnish operations
May 2019

Consolis Group, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of precast concrete solutions, will strengthen its position in Northern Europe and Latvia by acquiring a major part of TMB Group, one of the main producers of concrete elements in the Baltics and Finland.

Through this acquisition, Consolis reinforces its presence in Northern Europe and Latvia. Those activities benefit from the long-lasting experience of TMB Group which brings more than 50 years of industry expertise and specific capabilities in both residential and non-residential buildings. It operates in Finland through Betonimestarit Oy and in Latvia through TMB Elements SIA. The annual revenues of these local operations acquired by Consolis exceeded €100 million in 2018.

Ellex team was led by Partner Sven Papp and included Ellex Raidla Senior Associates Gerda Liik and Martin Maesalu in Estonia, and Ellex Klavins Partner Peteris Dalderis and Senior Associate Reinis Sokolovs in Latvia.

Ellex Klavins advised and represented a major steel distributor in a complex employment dispute
Successfully assisting our client - a major steel distributor in Latvia - in a complex employment dispute. The case involved court proceedings with an employee who was dismissed due to inability to perform his job obligations as the result of an inappropriate medical condition. The matter concerned an area that has not yet been addressed by the Latvian case-law – situations when an occupational doctor orders the employer to follow certain limitations in respect of employees work but the employer is unable to provide work to the employee that would satisfy these limitations.

The client was represented by partner Daiga Zivtina and associate partner Andris Lazdins.
